In the fourth face-to-face Kyiv derby of the season, the teams faced off in intense battle. Our team played without the injured Oleksii Melnykov, as well as newcomers Radek Haas and Matvii Mazko (the latter returning to Capitals from Kryzhynka where he was on loan).
Vadym Shakhraichuk`s team started the game aggressively, creating many scoring chances that were denied by the opposition. The hosts earned the first power play opportunity in the third minute after Liesnikov was penalized, but they failed to capitalize on it. In fact, it was the opponents who managed to score first. Karpenko capitalized on a defensive breakdown and scored his 22nd goal of the season to give his team the lead.
The visitors had a chance to extend their lead on a power play soon after, but they couldn’t convert it. In the second period, Capitals found themselves short-handed once again, but played well in defense. Midway through the period, our team took control of the game. Oliynyk`s shot after assist by Hu doubling the lead for the guests.
In the third period, Sokil were able to come back from behind and quickly narrow the score gap. Razumov scored a first puck for Shafarenko`s team. Midway through the period, Sokil tied the game. A counterattack by Cherdak and Maksym Zherebko resulted in Zherebko scoring a crucial goal.
With no more goals scored in regular time, the game went into overtime. On the fourth minute hosts secured the win with a decisive goal by Borodai.
Sokil now lead over Capitals by four points. However, there is no time for worries as the regular championship continues with many important matches ahead. Shakraichuk`s team will play in Odesa on Sunday, while Sokil will travel to Bila Tserkva one day later.
