Tommorow, Oleg Tymchenko’s squad will play their first match as part of their trip to Scotland. Their opponent will be a representative of the Elite Ice Hockey League – Fife Flyers.
We will not emphasize the league our future opponents represent in upcoming articles, as all the teams play in the unified British championship.
The Fife Flyers represent the town of Kirkcaldy and are the oldest team in Great Britain, with a history dating back to 1938. Over this time, they have won more than 60 trophies, adding both Scottish and British victories to their collection.
Among their British accolades, three championships stand out: in the 1984/1985, 1999/2000, and 2003/2004 seasons. Since 2011, the team has been competing in the Elite Ice Hockey League. During this period, the Fife Flyers’ biggest success was reaching the Challenge Cup final in 2022/2023, where they lost to Belfast.
Following the results of the previous season, the Kirkcaldy team finished 10th in the regular championship, which prompted personnel changes. Canadian Jamie Russell at the helm of the Scottish club was replaced by American Tim Wallace, who spent the last four years in various roles at Milton Keynes Lightning, serving as head coach last season.
The new Fife Flyers coach made significant changes to the roster, completing a series of transfers. Traditionally for the EIHL, the team’s roster includes over a dozen (12) North American players.
They are complemented by both British players and representatives from other European countries. In particular, it is worth noting the signing of Czech goaltender Dominik Groh from the Italian Sterzing/Vipiteno, Swedish defenseman Victor Bjorkung (Zaglebie Sosnowiec, Poland), Slovak forward Michael Drabek (Vlci, Slovakia), as well as two Finns – Joona Vainio (Hermes, Mestis division) and Mika Partanen, who tallied 50 points for Unia Oswiecim last season.
For both opponents, this match will be the first friendly game of the offseason. Given the major roster changes, it promises to be an interesting test.
It should be added that Kyiv Capitals will face a Scottish team for the first time, but not a British one.
In 2024, while still under the management of Vadym Shakhraichuk, the Kyiv team played against the Coventry Blaze. We shall see how our history of matchups with EIHL representatives continues.
